Why Ubud became a yoga town

Indonesia's tourism ministry describes Ubud as a perfect place to experience spiritual awakening and enlightenment, and suggests starting the day with a refreshing yoga class and a healthy breakfast.7,8 The name itself traces to ubad, Balinese for medicine, a nod to the medicinal plants and herbs found around the town.9

Whatever the reason, the town is full of rooms that have been built for practice: open wooden pavilions over paddy fields, bamboo studios, garden shalas and hotel terraces. A first-time visitor can spend a week sampling and never repeat a teacher. If you want to do one class and one only, this page helps you choose it.

The studios fall into three groups: the very large centres with a timetable that runs from early morning to evening, the mid-sized schools that pair daily classes with teacher trainings, and the small rooms that run a handful of sessions a day and often work by appointment. We cover one of each, then the private options.

The Yoga Barn: the large, varied centre

The Yoga Barn in Ubud calls itself one of the world's largest and most varied yoga and wellness centres, and says it offers more than 180 classes each week across eight studios in Ubud.1 Its daily programme lists yoga, meditation, breathwork, Pilates, sound healing, movement and dance, and its casual drop-in classes suit beginners through experienced practitioners.6

It opens early and closes late: Sunday to Friday from 6:30 am to 9:00 pm, and Saturday from 6:30 am to 10:30 pm.10 The address is Jl. Hanoman in Pengosekan, a short ride south of the centre, and Indonesia Travel describes the studio as sitting in the middle of paddy fields.12,13

It also sells retreats and teacher trainings, which we treat on the retreats page, and Indonesia Travel notes classes for all levels, family lessons and a number of classes for children only.14 If you travel with a family and want a plain class, it is the first place to look.

How big the big studios are

Studio sizes, by the numbers they publish

  • Yoga Barn studios8
  • Radiantly Alive shalas5

The Yoga Barn names eight studios; Radiantly Alive names 5 shalas.1,15

Radiantly Alive: a studio with a daily timetable

Radiantly Alive describes itself as a yoga studio in Ubud since 2010, working and open daily.4 It lists a drop-in class of 75 minutes, with vinyasa, yin, restorative and more every day, and five shalas.4,5,15

The studio is at Jl. Jembawan No. 3, closer to the town centre than the Yoga Barn, and lists itself with Yoga Alliance as an RYS-200 school with E-RYT 500 faculty.16,17 It also says more than 1,000 people have trained there since 2010.18

That mix of daily drop-in classes and long trainings is typical of the mid-sized schools. It means a good deal of the room is full of people who practise most days, and the teaching leans towards regular students. A visitor on a one-off class will usually find the rhythm of the room easy to join, but it pays to read the class title before you go.

Smaller rooms and private teachers

The listings on the booking platform point to three kinds of small room. One Eat Pray Love day includes a 1.5 hour beginner-friendly class at Intuitive Flow Yoga Studio, with mats provided, on the Penestanan side of town. The Pranasanti studio runs a 1.5 hour yoga and healing meditation session with pranayama breathing, energy cleansing and a sound and mantra session.

That last session is a different kind of hour from a vinyasa class. The listing asks you to wear comfortable clothing, arrive 10 to 15 minutes early, tell the host about health concerns and bring a mat if you like. A separate session at the same studio combines sound yoga and energy healing over 2 to 3 hours, and both offer small groups and pickup.

If you want one teacher and no crowd, a one-hour private Hatha class with a certified teacher can come to your own place in Ubud, from $17, with pickup included. It is the cheapest listing we found for a first lesson, and the least social.

What a drop-in costs

The Yoga Barn publishes its prices in rupiah. A single drop-in is IDR 180K, a class for Indonesians or students aged 10 to 20 is IDR 100K, and class cards run from IDR 495K for 3 classes to IDR 3.300K for 30 days of unlimited classes.2,21 Mats and props are included, and a shower or bath towel rents for 40k.3 We quote those as the studio states them and do not convert them.

The platform listings state their prices in dollars. A healing hour starts from $21, a sound yoga session from $26 and the Eat Pray Love day, which includes a yoga class, from $52. Those are from-prices, and the exact total for your date appears on the booking page.

For a week of daily classes, a card or a month pass is the obvious route. For a single morning, compare the studio's own drop-in with a platform listing that bundles a pickup, since the transfer can cost as much as the class.

For your first class

A checklist for yoga in Ubud

Ahead of your first class3

What to tuck into your bag3

  • A bottle of water for the mat
  • Clothes you can stretch in
  • A towel, since the Yoga Barn rents them

Mat manners2

  • Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early
  • Tell the teacher about injuries

Choosing a class for your level and your day

Start with the hour. The Yoga Barn's opening times run from 6:30 am, and Indonesia Travel suggests an early class followed by breakfast.10,8 An early start also keeps you out of the midday heat, a sensible move when Denpasar's mean monthly temperatures run between 26.3 and 28.2 degrees C.22

Then the level. The Yoga Barn describes its drop-ins as suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners alike, and the listing for the Eat Pray Love day calls its class beginner-friendly.6 If you have never practised, look for those words and avoid a class whose title says advanced, flow or intensive.

Lastly, the travel. Indonesia Travel says Ubud suits exploring on foot or by hired bicycle or motorbike, with hilly terrain, and the main studios are spread across the town, so check the map before you commit to a second class in the same morning.11 Leave a gap, wear what you can move in and carry water.

Putting yoga and puppies in one trip

This site is built around the puppy hour, and the two go together more easily than you might expect. A puppy class takes 1 hour, including a gentle Hatha session, and it leaves most of the day free. A visitor who wants real practice can take a studio class in the morning and the puppy class later, or the other way round.

If you want to weigh the puppy class against a plain class, the price page sets them side by side, and the ethics page explains why we ask you to read the origin line first. A sensible plan for a holiday in Ubud is one of each, with a day of the town in between.

Whichever you choose, book something you can cancel and keep your options open. The listings here give the fare back in full for a cancellation made a day or more ahead, which makes a trial class low risk.
