A first class is easier with a plan. This guide gives the age rules on the two Bali listings, a minute-by-minute plan for the hour, what to wear and bring, how to handle a young puppy and what to do if a child is scratched.

Start with this
Whether a child can come at all is the first thing to settle, and the two Bali listings answer it very differently. The Ubud and Uluwatu listing says sessions suit adults and children aged 6 and up, and asks parents of a child younger than 6 to enquire first through WhatsApp.
The Canggu and Uluwatu listing is stricter: it states that children under 16 cannot join a regular session, and under 18 a rescue session. A family with a child of any age under that line will need the first listing, and a family with teenagers will need to read the second one carefully.
These are rules set by the organisers, not by the law or by any welfare body, and they can change. Read the listing on the day you book, and if a child is close to the line, send the organiser a message and keep the answer.
What differs for a family
| Question | Ubud and Uluwatu class | Canggu and Uluwatu class |
|---|---|---|
| Youngest guest | 6 and up | 16 for a regular session |
| Smaller children | Ask first by WhatsApp | Not admitted to a regular session |
| Own dog | Leave it at home | Do not bring one |
| Starting fare | $40 | $31 |
| Cancellation | Free until a day before | Free until a day before |
As each listing states its terms.
What to wear to puppy yoga is a short list, and the listing keeps the instruction brief: dress appropriately for the weather when the session is held outdoors. In practice that means clothes a child can stretch in and sit on a floor in, and that you do not mind covered in puppy hair. Leave jewellery and anything dangling at the hotel, since small claws catch on it.
Think about the heat. Monthly mean temperatures at Denpasar run between 26.3 and 28.2 degrees C, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, and Ubud lies inland, so use that only as a rough guide.3 Light layers work for a class that may be in an open pavilion, and a hat is useful on the way there.
Bare feet are the norm on a yoga mat, but check what the organiser asks for. Packing a small towel and a bottle of water is easier than borrowing, and a spare shirt is a good idea for a young child who may dribble, spill or take a puppy into their lap.
Age rules in numbers
The minimum ages the two listings state; the Ubud and Uluwatu listing admits younger children by prior enquiry.
Bring yourselves, the confirmation and the address that arrives after booking. A phone is useful for photographs, but keep it put away during the yoga, since the photo time comes at the end of the hour.
Do not bring a dog of your own. The Canggu and Uluwatu listing says expressly that you should not bring your own puppy, since the puppies will already be on site, and the same sense applies anywhere. A strange dog in the room is a risk to the puppies and to your child.
Leave food and strong scents at the hotel, too. A child with a biscuit in a pocket will become the most popular person in the room, and not in a way that helps the class. If you do bring a snack for afterwards, keep it in a bag and out of reach.

Yoga hour
Healing yoga for adults
The listing asks you to report allergies or health concerns, especially to pets, before the class. If a child has asthma, eczema or a known reaction to dog hair, say so when you book, so that the organiser can suggest a spot in the room or advise you not to come.
Tell them too if a child is anxious around dogs. A puppy yoga class is built around close contact, and a child who is frightened will not enjoy the hour. The honest answer might be to sit at the edge and watch for a while, and a good organiser will let you.
It also helps to ask how many puppies and how many guests will be in the room, and where the puppies rest. Those are the same questions the ethics page recommends, and a child can learn from watching you ask them.
A plan for the hour
A quarter of an hour before
Let the child see the room before the class fills.
First 10 to 15 minutes
A short, calm introduction while everyone settles.
Next 40 to 45 minutes
Gentle Hatha yoga, with a puppy wandering past.
Final 10 to 15 minutes
The time for cuddles and pictures.
Straight after
A habit worth keeping after any animal contact.2
The listed hour has three parts: about 10 to 15 minutes of arrival and settling in, about 40 to 45 minutes of gentle Hatha yoga and about 10 to 15 minutes of puppy playtime and photographs. A young child will do best in the middle part if the first has already burned off the excitement, so let them meet a puppy briefly at the start and then sit.
The yoga is light stretching, hip openers and spinal elongation, and a child can do it in their own way. There is no need to copy the teacher exactly. Sitting cross-legged with a puppy on a lap counts. Praise stillness, not poses, and puppy yoga with kids will go better.
RSPCA Australia warns that animals in these classes are often passed around with little choice about when and how they interact with participants.5 Teach your child to let the puppy come to them, to use two gentle hands and to put it down the moment it wriggles.

Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know. Do not allow animals to lick open wounds
For the morning of the class
It is rare and usually accidental, but you should know the drill. The World Health Organization says anyone bitten or scratched by a potentially rabid animal should wash the wound with water and soap for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.1 The CDC says rabies vaccines are typically available throughout most of Indonesia.6
Children deserve extra care. WHO says 40% of rabies deaths are children under 15, and the CDC advises not to touch or feed animals you do not know.7,2 Tell the staff straight away, ask about the puppy's vaccination, and see a doctor the same day.
None of this should spoil the hour. It is the same sensible caution you would take with any strange dog on a Bali street, applied in a setting where the dogs are chosen and watched.
A mixed-age group works best when everyone has a job. Let the oldest child hold the phone for the photos at the end, give a middle child the water bottle, and keep the smallest child close enough for an adult to touch. A class is a quiet room, and children behave better when they know what is expected of them.
Adults have a part too. The Ubud and Uluwatu listing describes sessions that suit adults as well as children, so you are not there merely to supervise. Take the stretches seriously, show how to sit with a puppy and stay calm if one climbs over you. Children copy what they see.
A grandparent can join if they can sit on the floor, since the programme is light stretching and hip openers and nothing needs a leap. Say so while booking if anyone has a knee, hip or back problem, and ask whether a chair is possible.
Choose a morning when no one is tired. Arrive 15 minutes early, as the listing asks, so the child sees the room before it fills. Decide beforehand who holds the phone and who sits with the child, and agree a signal that means it is time to leave the mat.
If your family likes a regular class afterwards, the Yoga Barn has family lessons and a number of classes for children only, according to Indonesia Travel.8 A puppy hour is a good opening, and a studio class is a way to keep the habit going without animals.
Above all, keep the expectations modest. The point of a first class is for everyone to leave with a good story, a few blurry photos and no scratches.
