From a single day of classes and a massage to a month of teacher training, Ubud sells yoga by the length of your stay. This guide sets out the options studios publish, what a 200-hour credential means and the practical limits on your visa.

Start with this
A yoga retreat in Ubud, Bali, is sold in three tiers. The first is a package of a day or a few days, built from a class pass, a meal and a treatment. The second is a retreat that includes a bed and a daily programme. The third is a training that ends in a credential. This page covers all three and says plainly which of them we can price from the sources we hold.
The studios publish their own rates in rupiah, and we quote them exactly as they state them, without converting. The booking-platform listings we use for day trips show dollar from-prices, which are separate and rounded.
If you only have a few days, the short packages and the day trips are the realistic route, and the longer options need planning on the scale of weeks, a visa and sometimes a place booked months ahead.
Packages side by side
| Package | Price | Includes | Stay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-day | IDR 1.1 Mil | Meal, juice, 3 classes, massage | Left out of the fare |
| 3-day | IDR 2.25 Mil | Lunches, juice, 5 classes, massages | Left out of the fare |
| 7-day | about IDR 14.2 million | Unlimited classes and treatments | Studio accommodation |
The studio's own prices, in rupiah, as stated and not converted.1,2,3,4,9
The Yoga Barn's 1-day Blissful Package is priced at IDR 1.1 Mil and includes a healthy meal at the Garden Kafe, a juice, a pass for 3 yoga or meditation classes and an Abhyanga massage.1,2 Accommodation is not included, and the studio asks you to book at least 4 days in advance.4
The 3-day package is priced at IDR 2.25 Mil, again without accommodation.3 The 7-day package costs about IDR 14.2 million, and it is the only one of the three that the studio sells with a stay on its own accommodation.9 Those are the studio's figures, in rupiah, and the page they come from may change.
A package like this is a reasonable way to test the water. You get a structured few days without committing to a course, and the classes are the same ones any drop-in guest attends, so you are in with regular students and not in a separate group.
Training lengths
The training lengths the Yoga Barn lists on its training page.5
Yoga Alliance, a US credentialing body, describes its Registered Yoga Teacher credential as the foundational 200-hour training that provides a strong base in yoga techniques, philosophy, anatomy and ethics.6 The 500-hour route is an RYT 200 followed by a further 300-hour training at a Registered Yoga School.8
Yoga teacher training in Ubud is sold by schools that tell you whether they are registered. Radiantly Alive lists itself as an RYS-200 school with E-RYT 500 faculty, offers a 200-hour foundation in Bali or part online, and a 300-hour training, and says more than 1,000 people have trained there since 2010.10,11,12 The Yoga Barn lists trainings of 50, 100, 200 and 300 hours.5
Do not take a credential on trust. A school's own claim of registration is worth checking against the credentialing body, and the length of a course tells you more about the depth of the work than its name does.

A teacher training can run for weeks, and Indonesia's immigration directorate says a Visa on Arrival is valid for 30 days and can be extended only once.7 The same page gives its fee as Rp 500,000, with the same cost for an extension, and says it cannot be converted to another stay permit type.13,14
Visa rules do change, so confirm the current terms with the immigration directorate or your embassy before you pay a school. Ask the school whether it advises on visas and what happens to your fee if you cannot get one.
Remember also the Bali tourist levy, Rp 150,000 for every visitor, charged once on the trip, which is separate from any visa fee and any course.15 Keep the receipt with your passport.

Indonesia Travel puts Bali's dry season from April to October, with the wet season running November to March.16 Denpasar's normals from the Japan Meteorological Agency run from 350.7 mm of rain in January to 27.6 mm in July, with monthly mean temperatures between 26.3 and 28.2 degrees C.17,18,19
Denpasar is on the south coast, so those readings are not Ubud's, and Ubud sits inland among hills. Treat them as a hint about the season, nothing more precise than that. In the wet months an open-air shala is atmospheric and sometimes damp, so ask a school how it runs classes in heavy rain.
If you can choose your dates, the dry months are the easier ones for a first stay. If you are a regular, the wet season is quieter, and some students prefer it.

Before you sign up
Begin with the schedule. A training is a full-time commitment, and a school should be able to tell you what a normal day looks like, how many students share a room and which teachers will lead which modules. The Yoga Barn describes its trainings as part of a wider centre, while Radiantly Alive describes its own as an academy built around a working studio.5,11
Then ask about the money, in rupiah, and about what happens if you have to leave. Our sources give the price of the short packages but not the fee of any 200-hour course,6 so we cannot quote one, and you should be wary of any page that quotes a figure without saying what it covers: food, a bed, books, the exam and the registration.
Last, ask former students. Radiantly Alive says more than 1,000 people have trained there since 2010, so there are many to ask.12 A school that is proud of its graduates will connect you with them, and a school that avoids the question is telling you something.
If a week is too much, the booking platform lists day trips that include yoga. A whole Ubud wellness day with a water-purification ritual at a holy water temple, a one-hour Balinese massage, a yoga class and a healthy meal at a villa takes 8 hours with pickup included and starts from $82. The listing says it is not allowed for women during their period.
An Eat Pray Love inspired day starts from $52 for about 8 to 9 hours and combines a walk through rice terraces, a 1.5 hour yoga class and a purification ritual at Tirta Empul. Lunch is not included, modest clothing is required at the temple and sarongs are available.
Neither replaces a retreat. They are a way to see if a day of this suits you, and both can be cancelled free until 24 hours ahead, so trying one is low risk.
Ask yourself what you want to leave with. A retreat is time, a bed, a programme and rest, and you come home with the feeling and nothing on paper. A training is work, study and a credential, and you come home able to teach, with the effort that implies.
Neither is better. A good test is whether you would be content to attend the classes without a certificate. If so, a retreat or a package will give you most of what you want. If the credential is the point, choose a school whose registration you can confirm and plan the visa first.
And whichever you pick, keep the puppies out of the decision: they are one hour in a week in Ubud, and a nice one, but the big choices here are about where you sleep, who teaches you and how long you stay.
